2021 Summer School @ APS

Following the Government publication of the summer school initiative, the APS team worked to develop a bespoke four-day summer school programme. The aim of the four days was to assist with the transition process and introduce pupils to our APS PROUD ethos. Attendance was excellent and 204 pupils benefitted from the experience.

Each day started with a thematic introduction based on the following two texts:

1. You Are Special by Max Luchado

2. Dream Big

The lessons addressed the following areas:

  • Self-belief
  • Friendship
  • Supporting one another
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • Becoming part of a community

Following the thematic introductory lesson, pupils continued to complete a series of lessons including PE, Mental Health, Art, Performing Arts, Maths and Science. All the lessons followed themes from the set texts and were personally planned and delivered by APS staff.

The success of the week was reflected in the confidence of the pupils and the increased understanding and application of Abbey Park PROUD. Pupils took home a goody bag of basic equipment, work from the week, a superhero peg person (as a reminder to always be the best you can be) and a ‘Treasure Chest of Positivity’. Within the art lessons, the pupils created a mural based on the theme of welcome. This was constructed in multiple languages and will be displayed in the APS reception area later this term.

Initial feedback has been very positive from pupils, parents and staff. Peer mentors worked with the staffing team and were an amazing support demonstrating APS PROUD in supporting the whole week. While some pupils were understandably anxious, we had key successes with pupils increasing their attendance throughout the week to overcome their nerves and participate in group activities.

The week ended with a whole year group assembly where we watched a video showcasing pupil successes and performed ‘Superhero’ – singing and signing as a whole ensemble.

Summer School was a very positive and successful week which was enjoyed by all! Attached is the initial parental questionnaire, feedback from which demonstrates that anxiety rate indicators have fallen by 1. We will be sending a prompt for more parents to complete this questionnaire.
