Pupil Premium

The pupil premium grant is funding to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in state-funded schools in England. The funding is paid directly to schools. The government has empowered schools to decide how best to use this funding to raise the performance of pupils eligible for the pupil premium and to close the achievement and attainment gap between them and their peers.

Who is eligible for the pupil premium?

The following groups are eligible for pupil premium:

  • Pupils who are recorded as eligible for free school meals, or have been recorded as eligible in the past 6 years, including eligible children of families who have no recourse to public funds (NRPF)
  • Children looked after by local authorities, referred to as looked-after children
  • Children previously looked after by a local authority or other state care, referred to as previously looked-after children

Service pupil premium is additional funding for schools with pupils who have parents serving in the armed forces. One or more of the following criteria must be met:

  • One of their parents is serving in the regular armed forces, including pupils with a parent who is on full commitment as part of the full-time reserve service - this includes pupils with a parent who is in the armed forces of another nation and is stationed in England.
  • Registered as a ‘service child’ on any school census in the past 6 years.
  • One of their parents died while serving in the armed forces and the pupil receives a pension under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme or the War Pensions Scheme.

Further information on the pupil premium funding can be found here: Pupil premium: overview - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

Free School Meals

If you think your child qualifies for additional funding, please apply through Swindon Borough Council: Click Here

In the event that your child does not already get free school meals but may qualify due to your family's income, please get in touch with us to sign up. The school may still be able to claim funds that could be used to assist your child even if you do not want him or her to have the meals.

To speak to someone about registering your child for Free School Meals, please contact the school finance office on 01793 705400 or email direct on Finance@abbeyparkschool.org.uk.

How do we spend the pupil premium funding at Abbey Park School?

We don’t want to be restrictive or prescriptive on how the funding is used to help our disadvantaged students, we want to be able to address their need; academic, or pastoral or both, and then provide what the student and/or family see as beneficial to adding to their positive experience here whilst at Abbey Park. Implementation of the funding in the past has included, but is not limited to:

  • Small group tuition.
  • Small group revision sessions.
  • Behaviour and attendance support programmes.
  • Reading initiatives and character-building programmes.
  • Support with uniform and/or PE kit. We have pre-loved uniform for families to access at any time upon request. Students can speak to their tutor, Head of Year or Mr Stubbs.
  • Support with stationary/learning materials. Students can speak to their tutor, Head of Year or Mr Stubbs.
  • Financial support towards materials for practical subjects at GCSE, such as contribution towards cooking ingredients or peripatetic music lessons.
  • Financial support towards enrichment activities such as Duke of Edinburgh expeditions and arts award.
  • Financial support towards education trips supporting the curriculum and attainment.
  • Counselling or mentoring from qualified internal or external practitioners, where there is an identified need.
  • Provision of additional careers advice (CEIAG), where there is an identified need.
  • Provision of key texts and revision guides (provided in year 10).
  • Any other valid use of the funding to support the attainment and welfare of young people in our care.
